Childhood/early years

Sr. Francis Drake was born in 1545 near Travistack, Devon. When Drake was nine his family left Devon due to the Catholic Revolt.  When they left Devon, Drake's family lived on a boat. In his early 20's he worked with trading goods.

Exploration years

Drake sailed for England.  He went on this journey to discover America and steal from the Spanish.  He found what he set out for and a lot more. He was the first Englishman to sail around the world.  When Drake returned from his journey the queen of England gave him 10,000 dollars.

  • Sr. Francis Drake was a privateer, which means he would go on journeys without telling his crew.
  • Drake married a woman named Mary Newman but the couple never had any children
  • The Spanish were afraid of Drake and called him "The Dragon"
  • Drake was the eldest of five children
  • Francis Drake died on a voyage in Panama to attack the Spanish in the West Indies
